The Current Facts of the Case
The Mason County Sheriff's Office arrested Samuel Martin Caffey (who also goes by Sam Caffey) on five (5) counts, including but not limited to rape of a child in the third degree:
- Delivery of a controlled substance
- Possession of depictions of minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct
- Rape of a child in the third degree
- Child molestation in the third degree
- Sexual misconduct with a minor in the first degree
The arrest was made after a 15-year-old female Shelton High School student was reported missing to the Sheriff’s Office on April 15, 2023. Shortly after being reported missing, the student was located by her family about a mile away from her home, with her high shool counsel Caffey. According to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office, both Caffey and the student were interviewed that same night by police, but law enforcement was unable to establish probable cause to effecuate an arrest.
Given the oddity of that initial encounter, detectives from the Mason County Sheriff's Office continued their investigation by contacting the Shelton School District and informing it of the incident. Through cooperation with the Shelton Police Department, additional complaints of inappropriate contact by Caffey toward other female students eventually came to light and were investigated.
Caffey was placed on Administrative Leave by the District and ultimately terminated as of his arrest on June 2, 2023, where he was arrested at his home without incident.
